Wisdom from a Maverick

A Maverick owner, that is...In this article Mark Cuban provides some serious food-for-thought about the college tuition/debt structure currently in place. I (Drew) made the MISTAKE of going into debt to earn an MBA degree and paying it off was painful. To those contemplating going to college or sending your kids to college we would recommend reading the book Debt-Free U: How I Paid for an Outstanding College Education Without Loans, Scholarships, or Mooching off My Parents by Zac Bissonnette and making decisions that are within your families means. You really can earn a degree and/or certification debt free!

Tis the season to play softball

We receive weekly updates from the Lott clan of the plight of the Sunrise Baptist Softball team. The team winning about half of its games is the side story. The main story is that a bunch of men are meeting each week to be active and do something they enjoy! What's more, spouses, parents, and siblings often go watch and support the team building an even stronger bond. You may be reading this and thinking to yourself how much you hate softball, which is fine and fair. The example is merely one example that a group of guys has found that we fully support. Before dismissing the Church League softball example try relating it to your own story and think about sports/activities/groups/teams that you can pursue to provide health and pleasure to your life.

DIY: kefir

We really enjoy geeking out about this nutrition stuff and we're to the point of tinkering with making some of our own fermented foods. We previously introduced this sourdough buckwheat pancake recipe. We make it regularly and tolerate it well. The next on the DIY list for the Lott family is making kefir. Check out the following sites that introduce the benefits of kefir, how to make it, and where to buy it. We are going to use an organic, grass-fed, low temp pasteurized, non-homogenized cow milk source first and may seek out a source for local goat milk at some point, with the long-term goal of owning a goat or two and REALLY making our own kefir/yogurt/sour cream etc. Feel free to share your fermented food DIY stories in the comments section.

Athletes in Action

A few years back I had the opportunity to serve as an Assistant Baseball Coach for the Bolivar, New York Athlete's in Action summer collegiate baseball team. The experience was life changing for the players and coaches alike. Throughout the summer the players developed their own personal salvation story which they were able to share with opposing teams, youth baseball campers, and a single mom whose house they made-over. If you or someone you know is a competitive athlete in college or entering college, you may consider joining a short-term or long-term AIA team!
